After students saw their own work in the museum’s galleries, the museum became a standard of excellence for the young artists who wanted their work to be chosen for the exhibition.

Many of the students who submit photographs for the exhibition have been working with Mr. Carrington and the museum for three consecutive years. During their sophomore years, students begin by learning the basics of camera and darkroom techniques. By their senior years, those technical aspects have become second nature to the students, and they are able to concentrate on the content of the images. Many students who have worked on this program have gone on to graduate from photography programs at the college level around the country.

Each year, museum education staff and Mr. Carrington select exemplary photographs from submissions by approximately 60 high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors, ages 15-17, to comprise an exhibition at the museum entitled Eye on Third Ward. The works are professionally printed and framed for the exhibition. The students’ writings describing the places and people in the photographs are exhibited with the photographs. Each year, the exhibition is also presented at churches, community centers, and professional associations around the city.
